Read on about:
Chances are really rather excellent you'll find one or more activities to add to your itinerary!
If you are looking for a vacation spot where you can rent a cabin on the water yet feel like you are still getting away from it all, Honeoye Lake is where you want to go.
Honeoye Lake is the second smallest of the Finger Lakes, at 4.5 miles long. To the west of the lake you'll find Canadice Lake, a protected, totally uninhabited lake that provides drinking water to the city of Rochester. To the east lays Canadaigua Lake, a highly populated lake with a huge draw for tourism.
But Honeoye Lake has an in-between feel. If you don't want the crowds but still want the amenities, this is the lake for you!
Rent a boat, go fishing for largemouth bass - just about anywhere on the lake - or try to spot river otter or beaver, you can't go wrong relaxing on Honeoye Lake.
"Where did Honeoye Lake get its name and what does it mean?" you ask?
Honeoye Lake gets its name from a Native American word, similar to most of the other lakes across the region. "Honeoye" is derived from the name the Senecas gave the lake, Hannayaye, which means, "finger laying there."
Historically, the Seneca Indians were a native people that lived in the central Finger Lakes Region of New York, as well as the Genesee Valley in western New York. One of the original five nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, they were known for both their diplomacy as well as their skill in warfare.
Today, the Seneca Nation of Indians remains a strong community that continues to work towards keeping their culture and language alive. Their territories are located in western New York outside of the Finger Lakes Region because much of the central region, including Honeoye and its surrounding lakes, was purchased by two Massachusetts land developers, Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham after the Revolutionary War.
