Jewel of the West

Looking to visit the lake that it is so authentic that even the locals stay all year? Then, Conesus Lake is your top choice! As much as 65% of lakefront properties on this lake are inhabited year-round, making Conesus Lake feel like home - because so many people choose to make it such.

Conesus Lake is the westernmost of the eleven Finger Lakes. It's also the smallest lake when measured by surface area, being only 8 miles long and one mile wide. With a maximum depth of 66 feet, Conesus Lake is 550 feet shallower than the deepest of the Finger Lakes, Seneca!

With an average depth of about 40 feet, this is one of the warmer lakes. So if you like to spend a lot of time in the water, Conesus a great choice for a visit.

Conesus Lake is a great place for more than just swimming though! Boating, fishing, and kayaking are all popular activities to do on the water. If you like hiking, camping, hunting, trapping, birding or wildlife photography, there is plenty of northeast hardwood forest to explore, so never fear if you aren't a water person.

And of course - don't forget your camera because this lake is picturesque!

Wild blackberriesConesus Lake may have been named for the wild blackberries the Seneca Indian used for medicine and harvested from its shores.

How did Conesus Lake get its name?

Wondering about the unusual name? Pronounced con-EES-shis, the name Conesus has a few disputed meanings, but it is agreed upon that it's derived from a Native American word, much like most of the other lakes in the region.

According to some sources, "Conesus" may mean "always beautiful." Others say it means "berry place" or "medicine lake" for the wild berries that grew along the lakes' shores.

To be honest, since it is the westernmost lake, I'm going to call it the 'Jewel of the West.' This title can be attributed to me, then there's no confusion.
