"How fast can I boat on Seneca Lake?" you ask.
You're gonna like this because...
...short answer: as fast as you want.
Currently, there is no boating speed limit on Seneca Lake, aside from a 5mph speed limit within 100 feet of the shore.
The perk of having no speed limit is... it's fun.
Imagine a gathering of sport speed boats on a lake surrounded by rolling hills. This day boats are classified into groups based on their power and speed.
Group 1 runs around Seneca Lake between 45-50 mph. Group 2 runs between 65-70 mph. And group 3 runs at 100 mph on their tour!
I'm not making this up. Every year, the Rochester Offshore Powerboat Association (ROPA) organizes the annual Battleship Run. At this run, boats with up to 100 horsepower engines tour around the lake at these high speeds.
Just for the fun of it.
Whether you join the run on the water or attend to watch the fleets, the Battleship Run is an AMAZING event to experience!
Please note: OutdoorFingerLakes.com highly encourages all lake users to boat responsibly and safely. Follow all safety rules and regulations provided by federal, state, and local governments while driving a boat.
Beginning on January 1, 2025, all operators of motorboats in New York State require a boater safety course certification.
You can take the course in-person or online, so no matter were you live, you can get started planning for your upcoming trip to the Finger Lakes.
Once you complete your certification, you'll get a pretty cool icon to show off on your license too!
You're in luck! There are.
