Boating Hemlock Lake will leave you feeling incredibly relaxed and recharged after being out in an almost untouched nature.
Hemlock Lake, in western New York, is an undeveloped Finger Lake, one of 11 lakes ground out during the most recent ice age.
This lake was once highly developed but the city of Rochester, to the north of the lake, became alarmed when residents began to get sick from the drinking water in the early 1900's. As a result, the city began to purchase all the property surrounding Hemlock Lake. New York State eventually purchased the land and continued to restore it to pristine nature.
Today, Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, the neighboring lake that was also purchased to protect Rochester's drinking water, are an established state forest. If you go, you'll experience a shoreline completely undeveloped by humans and ruled only by the trees and the waves. If you are looking to get away from the fast pace of life, Hemlock Lake is a little paradise in upstate New York.
I know you'll want to make sure to spend some time on the water while you visit Hemlock Lake.

Chances are really rather excellent you'll find one or more adventures to add to your itinerary!
Since Hemlock Lake is a protected waterway and that water is mainly for human use - including consumption - there are quite a few rules you'll need to follow when you visit. However, don't let that deter you! It's too beautiful a lake to miss!
Current rules limit boat and motorized engine size on the lake. Only craft less than 17-feet-long, and with a 10-horse power (or less) engine may be used on Hemlock Lake. Violation of this regulation can result in a ticket with hefty fines, so do follow the rules.
Additionally, there is no swimming, tubing, wading, bathing, or water skiing on the lake. There are also limitations on pets, and where you may fish on the lake.
Before you go, I highly encourage you to check out the Rules and Regulations on the NYS DEC website.
I'm glad you asked because it seems like there are a lot of don't's.
You can:
Beginning on January 1, 2025, all operators of motorboats in New York State require a boater safety course certification.
You can take the course in-person or online, so no matter were you live, you can get started planning for your upcoming trip to the Finger Lakes.
Once you complete your certification, you'll get a pretty cool icon to show off on your license too!
There are 2 boat launches on the eastern shore of Hemlock Lake, one at the northeast tip and another at the southeastern tip.
Please check rules and regulations before your visit to make sure you are prepared before you go.
This boat launch is located off East Lake Road, along the eastern shore of Hemlock Lake. It has a soft-surface boat launch surface, great for launching kayaks and canoes, but also sufficient for launching your small motor boat.
This launch site is located on the southeastern shore of Hemlock Lake. There's a soft-surface launch area that can get muddy, but works well when the water is higher.
The GPS may try to send you past the road if you are coming from the south, so turn onto the dirt road with the boating sign.
Hemlock Lake is too spectacular to miss by boat!
