Read on to find out:
Chances are really rather excellent you'll find one or more camping adventures to add to your itinerary!
Hemlock Lake, along with its neighbor Canadice Lake, is a New York protected state forest. While many state forests allow overnight campers, this state forest does not. Why is this?
Plain and simply, you can't camp because someone is drinking the lake water 30 miles away. Hemlock Lake is the source for drinking water for the city of Rochester and therefore has strictly rules and regulations to protect against contaminants and pollutants.
Camping is not allowed because the lack of bathrooms for campers would contaminate the water. Likewise, swimming and bathing are not allowed in the lake for the same reason. Doing dishes, even with a biodegradable soap, would harm the purity of this small lake's waters for its users.
Additionally, as much as we try to do a good job carrying in and carrying out, things get dropped, forgotten, and lost. These accidents, while unintentional, could damage the water quality of the lake.
You only get one option for camping near Hemlock Lake, but guess what? It's a pretty awesome option!
