Camping Conesus Lake

Trillium bunchGiant White Trilliums are fairly common in our Finger Lakes forests. They take 10 years to mature enough to flower and seed, and are considered a sensitive species. Please don't pick them if you spot them while camping!

If you are looking to camp in the Finger Lakes Region on a lake that is small, intimate, and away from the touristy energy and noise, choosing Conesus Lake is a smart choice.

Conesus Lake is one of the smallest Finger Lakes, and though the lakefront is developed with homes and hotels, it is not nearly as busy as one of the larger lakes, like Canandiagua or Cayuga. Think: there will be boat traffic, but not A LOT of boat traffic.

There are good opportunities for camping around Conesus Lake, whether you are tent camping, RVing, or looking to rent a cabin. Read on to find the site that most suits your camping bucketlist.

Letchworth State Park

Camping within the "Grand Canyon of the East" is an experience like no other that you won't want to miss.

Letchworth State Park is a large park that contains over 60 miles of hiking trails at your disposal when you decide you need a breath of fresh air. Located about 20 miles southwest of Conesus Lake, this park is your destination if you want to experience a gorgeous - and gorge-filled - Finger Lakes park.

Letchworth State Park offers 350 options for camping, most as tent camping sites. Additionally, there are about 80 cabins available to rent, and two cottages for you to choose from.

I highly recommend you make reservations well in advance for any of the camping options because Letchworth State Park is a popular Finger Lakes destination. Facilities are available but don't expect to be the only tent in the campsite loop. Even so, Letchworth offers amazing views, the peace of being outdoors, and you get the whole park to hike at your leisure.

Oh yeah - don't forget your camera, because the waterfalls and views are something to remember!

Sonyea State Forest

Another primitive camping site, Sonyea State Forest is isolated and quiet if you want to get away from it all. This state forest has designated camping spots with fire rings and flat areas for easy tent pitching.

Set on 922 acres, Sonyea State Forest is a multi-use area that offers hiking, wildlife viewing, hunting, trapping, and fishing, in addition to camping. I know you were hoping for a waterfall too - and you're in luck! Kesheqa Creek Falls Trailhead, located within the park, will lead you past some limestone layered waterfalls that are common within the Finger Lakes Region.

Please take note the the forest butts up against the land of a correctional facility on the northern edge of the park, and therefore it's important to stay on trails and know which property you're hiking on. But don't let this deter you from the amazing experience that awaits you in the Sonyea State Forest's heart.
